Maplestory for dummies.

First of all, welcome to the world of Maplestory.

Maplestory is a 2D MMORPG (2 dimensional Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play Game), this means you can literally run into people from across the globe. Most graphics are pixelated and unrealistic, what makes the game more fun to play. The characters you play with have huge heads and there are various hilarious elements, like 80 cm tall snails, a lollipop as mace and many more.

You can play Maplestory on Dial-up, but this will be really slow, and bound to disconnect, if you want to play you should have some sort of permanent internet connection.

Get the game.

Before you start the game you will have to download it, this can be done at the main site; www.mapleglobal.com under the tab ‘Downloads’.
Depending on your connection you can either pick the full download (.exe)
Or the compressed parts (.RAR).
While your downloading you can start with learning about the many different paths in Maplestory.

About The game.

When you start the game you will need to know what job you want to become, this is critical to get the best statistics for your character.
A job? Yes, you will be able to choose from 4 different jobs, I’ll explain them all.
Warriors are the strongest class defensive and offensive, but there attack range is large. They attack there enemies up close and need heavy armour to protect themselves, along with that they have a high amount of HP (Health Points) and really low MP (Mana Points) about 1000 HP - 150 MP.
They fight using a large variety of weapons, swords, axes, maces, spears, pole arms and blunt weapons.
Bowmen are among the long rangers off Maplestory, they can easily hit an enemy 3/4th of the screen away. A side effect is that up close, they can’t do a thing. They have a fair amount of HP and MP, about 1000HP - 400MP, and quite powerful attacks. They also have a high natural accuracy.
As weapons they use either bows or crossbows and always need a large supply of arrows with them.
Thieves are fast and untouchable fighters, with the right abilities they can be invisible for enemies and can avoid a lot of their attacks. They are divided in two groups, assassins and bandits (named after there second job names). Assassins use throwing stars and a special glove called a claw. They can do quite some damage, unlike bowmen they can fire and jump at the same time, but cant do damage up close.
Bandits use daggers and cutters to fight their enemies up close, much like a warrior but according to many, much more fun.
Magicians are one of the most popular jobs there is, although a pain to train in the earlier levels they have the highest damage until somewhere around level 50.
Because they have the lowest amount of HP of all jobs (250 HP - 1000 MP), they have spells that convert 80% of the damage into MP.
They are only job that uses magic attack and, for the second job advancement, elemental attacks. Many enemies are weak to a certain element, or have a low magic defence, keep in mind that some monsters are strong against an element or magic attack.
Their weapons are staffs and wands.

Starting a character.

Now that you’ve learned some about the jobs, you need to pick one before you make your first character.
Warriors need a lot of strength (STR) and dexterity (DEX), but have no need for intelligence (INT) and luck (LUK). If you want to create a warrior, roll the dice until you get one with 4 or 5 into INT and LUK. You will need to have 35 STR (and about 20 DEX) on level 10 to take the job advancement.
Bowmen need DEX and STR as well, there damage is calculated with DEX and again, no need of INT and LUK so try to get 4 or 5 into INT and LUK. You will need 25 DEX (and 20 STR) on level 10 to take the job advancement.
Thieves use LUK as base for the damage, but also need DEX. No need for INT and STR (although there are daggers where you need STR more about this later) try to get 4 or 5 into those. You will need 25 DEX at level 10 to take the job advancement.
Magicians use INT as base for damage and LUK, no STR or DEX Try to get 4 or 5 into those. Because future magicians have a hard time levelling up without any strength they can take the first job advancement at level 8, you will need 20 INT to take it.

Raising your beginner.

At each level you will receive 5 stat points and, after you take your job advancement, 3 ability points.
Warriors should raise there DEX to be twice as much as your level, the rest of the points go into STR.
Bowmen should raise there STR to be 5 more then your level, the rest of the points go into DEX.
Thieves should raise there DEX to be twice as much as your level, the rest of the points go into LUK.
Magicians should raise there LUK to be 3 more then your level, the rest of the points go into INT.
When you have reached lv 10 (8 for magicians) you should take the boat to Victoria Island in South Perry. First thing you need to do is go to the 'viking' at the middle of the map, he gives a quest that'll get you quite some exp when you take your job. Then use the ticket booth to travel to there city to take the job advancement. Magicians and bandit thieves can go to the armour shop located on the top right in Lith Harbor to buy a ‘Stolen Fence’ (shield).
Warriors need to go to Perion, Bowmen to Henesys, Thiefs to Kerning City and Magicians to Ellinea.

You got the job!

Congratulations! You now have your job!
You got 1 skill point for taking the job, use it wisely.
A small warning for magicians; just a wand won’t make you use magic attacks, you need to put a point into magic bolt.
There are skills that will increase your HP (warrior)/MP (magician) while levelling, raise these as fast as possible.
You will be low on cash for a while, if you don’t have a friend to help you out, first of all, buy your weapon, so you can fight and get more money, don’t make the mistake to buy armour first and ending up without a weapon.

How to divide your skills.

There are a couple of guides out there made to help you out with this, because there are to many ways you can do this, I wont try to explain it I’ll just give you a link to a website who has a lot of guides.

Hidden-street.net

Make sure you know what direction you want to go if you are an archer or rogue, because the skills should be added differently depending on the sides, for example, crossbowman usually use ‘Arrow Blow’ instead of ‘Double Shot’, and thieves who want to become an assassin have no need for ‘Double Stab’.

You are now no longer a dummy and ready to start your own story,

I hope my guide helped you!
